Submit one of the following:

 

Container/Tube: Gold top, Lavender (EDTA) tube

Specimen:  1 mL plasma or serum ( 0.5 mL min)

                       or 0.5 mL CSF (0.3mL min)

Transport Temperature: Frozen

Stability: 8 hours Room Temperature

                 24 Hours Refrigerated

                  3 Months Frozen

Useful For

The direct detection of WNV is a valuable tool in determining whether a patient is infected with West Nile virus. PCR is able to detect WNV RNA directly and does not rely on antibody markers of WNV infection, which are produced after RNA is detectable in newly infected individuals.
