This test is intended to aid in the diagnosis of both pneumococcal meningitis and pneumococcal pneumonia in conjunction with culture. This test should not be used as a test of cure. The clinical utility of this test in pediatric patients has not been determined.

Result Interpretation

Reference range: Negative
Positive   A positive result is indicative of pneumococcal pneumonia.
Negative    A negative result is a presumptive negative for pneumococcal pneumonia, suggesting NO current or recent pneumococcal infection. Infection due to Streptococcus pneumoniae cannot be ruled out since the antigen present in the specimen may be below the detection limit of the test.
