Clinical Info

Glutathione is a tripeptide and is the primary regulator of cellular redox states. Glutathione exists primarily in its reduced form (GSH), which upon oxidation forms the dimer, glutathione disulfide (GSSG). GSH can also form disulfide bridges with proteins as a result of oxidation or enzyme catalyzed reactions, giving rise to protein-bound glutathione (GSSP). Decreased glutathione levels in whole blood have been associated with Parkinson's disease, HIV, liver disease, renal failure, as well as preëclampsia.
