Physician Office Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a serum gel tube. Tube must be full. (Minimum volume:  Draw 1.75 mL of blood in a 3.5 mL serum gel tube or draw blood in a serum gel MICROTAINER®, completely filling the tube.) Allow blood to clot for 30 minutes. Centrifuge with stopper in place for 10 minutes at 3,000 rpm to ensure that gel barrier separates serum and cells. Keep specimen anaerobic (do not transfer) and send refrigerated in serum gel tube/MICROTAINER®. Specimen cannot be frozen.
