Performing Laboratory
Northwell Health Laboratories
Methodology
The FilmArray gastrointestinal panel (GI PCR Panel, Stool) is a multiplex PCR test that detects 22 pathogens (bacteria, parasites, and viruses) from stool in Cary Blair transport medium.(BioFire)
The pathogens detected on this panel are: Campylobacter species, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Salmonella species, Vibrio sp., V. cholerae, Yersinia enterocolitica, Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli, Enteropathogenic E. coli, Enterotoxigenic E. coli, Shiga toxin-producing E coli, E coli O157, Shigella/Enteroinvasive E. coli, Cryptosporidium sp., Cyclospora sp., Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Adenovirus 40/41, Astrovirus, Norovirus GI/GII, Rotavirus A and Sapovirus.

Physician Office Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube: Cary-Blair transport media
Specimen: Random Stool
Transport Temperature: Refrigerated or room temperature up to 4 days
Collection Instructions:
Add stool until level in Carey Blair vial is at fill-line on vial label. Do not over fill. Collect only one specimen.
Repeat testing may be performed after 14 days, if necessary.
Used For
Gastrointestinal disease can be caused by many agents, including bacteria, viruses and parasites. Culture for bacteria will not pick up the viruses or parasites. Tests for parasites will not detect the viruses or the bacteria. This GI profile is a multiplexed nucleic acid test intended for the simultaneous qualitative detection and identification of nucleic acids from multiple bacteria, viruses and parasites directly from stool samples in Cary-Blair transport media obtained from individuals with signs and/or symptoms of gastrointestinal infection.
