Test Code KL24UR Kappa/Lambda Light Chains, Total with Calculation

Performing Laboratory

Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute, Chantilly VA

Methodology

Nephelometric

Reference Values

Due to individual variations in 24-hour urine volume, no reference ranges exist for Total Kappa Chain and Total Lambda Chain.

Measured Kappa Chain: < 2.00 mg/dL

Total Kappa Chain: Not applicable
The calculation for this is: mg/dL x (TV/100) = mg/24 hr

Measured Lambda Chain: < 2.00 mg/dL

Total Kappa Chain: Not applicable
The calculation for this is: mg/dL x (TV/100) = mg/24 hr

Test Classification and CPT Coding

83883 (x2)

Day(s) and Time(s) Performed

Monday - Saturday at night

Physician Office Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube: 24 hr urine container- No Preservative

Specimen: 2 mL aliquot of 24 hour urine( 0.5 mL min)

Transport Temperature: Refrigerated

Useful For

Polyclonal immunoglobulin light chains (kappa and lambda) normally occur in a ratio of 2: 1, whereas monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains exhibit only one type of light chain, either kappa or lambda. A kappa: Lambda ratio outside of 2: 1 is an indication fo monoclonal gammopathy.
