Physician Office Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Blood

Container/Tube:  Green-top (sodium heparin) tube(s)

Specimen:  3 mL of heparinized whole blood

Transport Temperature:  Ambient

Collection Instructions:  Deliver specimen to laboratory STAT.
Note:  1. Indicate blood on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (blood).

 

Bone Marrow

Obtain 3 mL of bone marrow in a green-top (sodium heparin) tube(s). Invert several times to mix bone marrow. Forward promptly at ambient temperature. Deliver specimen to laboratory STAT.

Note:  1. Indicate bone marrow on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (bone marrow).

 

Bone Marrow Aspirate Smears

2 or more bone marrow aspirate smears. All smears should be air-dried, unfixed, and no more than 2 weeks old. Send slides in plastic slide containers. Forward promptly at ambient temperature. Deliver specimen to laboratory STAT.

Note:  1. Indicate bone marrow aspirate smear on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (bone marrow aspirate smear).
